we have a subway

seabus.jpg

and i’m not talking about the sandwich chain.

my mom came for a quick visit to vancouver en route to a cruise to hawaii so i thought it would be neat to try out vancouver’s new canada line train. i drove to the seabus in north van, took it across the water to the aptly named waterfront station and hopped the train to YVR. the train ride from waterfront station to the airport is about 20 minutes. those trains are going to be carrying lots of people come february for the olympics.

i always make up stories about the people i see on the trains. you know…where they’re going. where they’ve been…reminded me of my days living in chicago and taking the L, visiting family in NYC/brooklyn and taking the subway everywhere-and my personal north american fave, the streetcars in san fran.

don’t even get me started on my love of trains in europe…

sunday morning pancakes

pancakes.jpg

my grandma h made these crepe-y style pancakes…she taught my mom to make them and my mom taught me. may have even been my great gram, not sure. anyhoo…they’re simple and delicious.

in a blender:

  • one cup cottage cheese (sounds weird i know, you can also use plain yogurt. which may also sound weird, but trust me on this one)
  • one cup flour
  • one cup milk
  • three eggs (free range of course)
  • 1/4 c oil

blend it up real good so it’s nice & smooth and pour onto a hot buttered skillet*. top with real maple syrup. and more butter of course. as my hubby says: “fat = flavor!”

*we recently replaced our calphalon non-stick skillets (which are decidedly NOT non-stick) with scanpans from denmark and i have to say, the scanpans rock!

friday in the city

meant to post these yesterday but you know how it goes…we’re having GORGEOUS weather here. i rode my bike in vancouver friday (i like to pretend i’m a bike messenger.)

  • picked up new track & field goodies for the shop (the pic is sasha’s kitty)
  • ate my favorite black bean & feta panini at liberty bakery (3699 main)
  • AND a cannoli at a bakery on commercial drive but it wasn’t very good. where’s mike’s pastries when you need a cannoli?! oh yeah, it’s in boston. anyone know of a good cannoli in vancouver?
  • picked up stamp pads for all the new stamps (i was on my bike. i could only pick up little things.)
  • didn’t pick up the awesome vintage lamp i saw on main street. (probably wouldn’t have turned out very well.)
  • took some pics. which i will now share with you…

42 + 73

commute1.jpg

we have 42 stairs down to our house. there are another 73 stairs to get down to the cove. my daily commute to the shop consists of 42 stairs up, 73 stairs down and on the way home 73 stairs up and 42 stairs down. it only takes a few minutes (depending on how many times mike and/or auggie stops to pee.)

i love my commute.
